Traditional Funeral
Though the definition of what a “traditional” funeral consists of has changed over the years, most of the fundamental aspects have remained the same. It customarily consists of visiting hours at the funeral home with remains present in casket where friends and family are welcomed to attend and pay respects. Then a funeral service is held, which may take place at a church or in the funeral home. That ceremony is followed by a grave side committal service at a cemetery where the actual burial or mausoleum entombment takes place.
Direct Cremation
A family may choose to have a cremation rather than a traditional funeral service. When a direct or immediate cremation is chosen, the remains are cremated without being present for visiting hours at the funeral home or a church service. Often, a memorial service at a church or at the funeral home will take place at a later time.
Traditional Services With Cremation
While a family may choose to have their loved one cremated, they may also wish to have some of the aspects of a traditional funeral. This may certainly be accommodated. Visiting hours may take place at the funeral home with casketed remains present followed by the cremation. Furthermore, the casketed remains may be taken to church for a traditional funeral service before the cremation takes place.
Direct Burial
A direct burial involves casketing and burial of remains with no public visiting hours or funeral service with casket present prior to. A committal service is customarily held at the grave side, which may be followed by a memorial service at a church or at the funeral home at a future time.
