  Mrs. Callie Hubbard Palmer

July 1st 1909 - January 26th 2010

Callie H. Palmer, 100 PORTLAND -- Callie Hubbard Palmer, 100, died peacefully at Maine Medical Center on Jan. 26, 2010. Ever optimistic and cheerful, she was an inspiration to all who knew her. She was born in Baltimore, Md., July 1, 1909, to Marion S. and Alverta Butler Hubbard. She graduated from Western High School in Baltimore and attended the Maryland Institute of Art. Subsequently, she worked for 13 years in the gift department at Tuerke's Leather Goods store. In 1936 she married Elra Mouton Palmer, who passed away in 1979. Callie spent her life in the Baltimore area until moving to Village Crossings at Cape Elizabeth in 2006 at the age of 96 to be near her daughter, Arlene Palmer Schwind, and her husband, Wilmont M. Schwind, who are residents of Portland. Callie is also survived by her other daughter, Genevieve Palmer Moore, who lives in Melbourne, Australia with her husband, Michael J. Moore. Callie took great delight in her grandson, Byron Moore, and her two granddaughters, Colleen Arnold-Moore and Miriam Moore, and their spouses Timothy Arnold-Moore and Hideaki Sakurai. Her three great-grandchildren, Theodore, Eleanore, and Nathaniel Arnold-Moore have visited her several times in Maine. Callie enjoyed a spectacular 100th birthday celebration last July with all her family in attendance, except for grandson Byron and his fiancee, Jo Backstrom. Callie enjoyed travel and made twelve extended trips to Australia to visit her family there. Although the Depression cut short her formal art studies, Callie retained her talent for painting and handwork throughout her life. She inherited her father's musical ability and enjoyed singing and playing the piano. For 40 years she was an enthusiastic bowler on the Notre Dame Prep mothers' league and a faithful volunteer in the gardens at the Cylburn Arboretum. She was a lifelong Methodist.
